France calls for high standard municipal elections in Georgia

France has called on the Georgian government ‘to do everything possible’ to ensure that the forthcoming, October 2 municipal elections in the country ‘are in line with the EU's democratic values, norms and standards.’

A press statement released after the recent meeting between Georgian and French presidents in Paris says that France will pay ‘special attention to any attempt to destabilize the democratic institutions of independent Georgia, which would be against the aspirations of the Georgian people and the interests of the European Union.’

"The French president will remain in close contact with the president of Georgia in order to continue working to strengthen ties between the two countries," the statement said.

The communique has also praised ‘special ties’ between Georgia and France.
