Three charged with violation of safety regulations, killing 9 in Batumi, denied bail

Three individuals who have been charged with violation of safety regulations which allegedly caused a collapse of a residenatial building in Batumi on October 8, killing nine individuals, have been denied bail by Batumi court earlier today.

 

Trial will take place on December  1.

 

The detainees do not admit to the crime, stating that they acted in line with law.

 

The Georgian Chief Prosecutor’s Office claims that curently detained flat owner hired two workers to connect his first floor in the residentail building with the groundfloor, without having an official concent for this.

 

It says that the workers demolished a retaining wall which led to the collapse of one of the sections of the residential building, killing nine residents, including three minors.

 

The crime is punishable up to 10 years in prsion.

 

Today is a day of mourning in Georgia over the tragic incident.
