MEP Kubilius on Saakashvili’s criminal cases: there are different stories, with different characteristics, but for Brussels it is about perceptions

“When I spoke with the Georgian Dream ruling party, I mentioned that they would soon have to answer a simple question when politicians in Brussels began to compare the situation of Mikheil Saakashvili to what happened to Tymochenko during the Yanukovych era in Ukraine. Of course, these are probably different stories and they have different legal characteristics, but in Brussels, the issue is primarily about perceptions,” MEP Andrius Kubilius says.

He also spoke about the need to end polarization and the political crisis in Georgia.

"We would be glad to see that the political crisis in Georgia is over. First of all, it must be said that the Georgian people are very eager to join the EU and politicians must ensure that. We talked about some middle status, economic zone integration, but it requires very clear basic conditions - the maturity of democracy and the rule of law.

“A common market can not work in any country without the rule of law, it is very simple. Your court decisions must be trusted and respected by all other countries that enter the common market and this is a big problem for Georgia at the moment.

“In recent weeks, I have had conversations with both parties, with representatives of both the opposition and the ruling party. They visit Brussels and tell their own stories. When I spoke to the ruling party, I mentioned that they would soon have to answer a simple question when politicians in Brussels began to compare the situation of Mikheil Saakashvili to what happened to Tymochenko in Ukraine under Yanukovych. Of course, these are probably different stories and they have different legal characteristics, but in Brussels, the issue is primarily about perceptions," Kubilius said.
