Poroshenko returning to Ukraine amid treason charge

A plane has already left Warsaw which is taking former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to Kyiv to, as he says,  fight ‘politically motivated’ treason charges.

A prosecutor has alleged that Poroshenko was involved in the sale of large amounts of coal that helped finance Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine back in 2014-15.

Poroshenko is one of the richest Ukrainian businessmen, owning the Roshen confectionery empire.

The Kyiv court has already frozen Poroshenko's assets as part of its investigation into the allegations of treason.

Poroshenko claims that he is innocent and accuses current President Volodymyr Zelensky of seeking to discredit him politically to distract from Ukraine's economic and other problems.
