Georgia records more than 1,200 Omicron cases, only 14 hospitalized

Georgia has recorded more than 1,200 cases of a new strain of coronavirus dubbed as Omicron. Only 14 of the 1,200 individuals have been hospitalized, deputy Health Minister Tamar Gabunia says.

She stated earlier today that the majority of Omicron cases were mild.

The strain was reported in South Africa at the end of last year.

Since November 2021 It has spread rapidly across the world.

Georgia expects the new variant to fully replace the Delta strain in the coming weeks.

Health officials maintain that the strain will surge daily infections as Omicron is highly contagious, encouraging the people to receive the vaccine and a booster dose.

Georgia has reported 7,521 new cases of coronavirus out of 56,367 tests over the past 24 hours.

3,160 individuals have been recovered and 31 died in the reported period.

In total 14,512 have been killed by the virus in Georgia since April 2021.

57,659 people remain infected with Covid-19 in Georgia.
