Head of the United National Movement opposition party Nika Melia says that a repeated hunger-strike by imprisoned ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili poses serious threats to his life. 

Melia stated that Saakashvili is already weakened after a 50-day hunger strike and expressed hope that his demand for proper medical care would be fulfilled. 

He said that Saakashvili is a ‘captive and not a prisoner’ under the current state leadership, as many of his rights, like making phone calls, are restricted. 


The current authorities say that Saakashvili is treated like other prisoners and all his rights, as a prisoner, are ensured. 

Saakashvili returned to Georgia after eight years in political exile to help his United National Movement party remove the current state authorities 'via snap elections,’ as he said.
