Russians resume bombing of Azovstal plant after Kyiv evacuates 100

Russian troops have resumed the bombing of Mariupol Azovstal plant which is the only stronghold in the city which has been fully destroyed by Russia since the beginning of hostilities in late February.

 

The bombardment continued after Kyiv was able to evacule 100 individuals, including the ederly and  children from the plant thanks to the interference of the Red Cross and the United Nations.

 

The evacuation is expected to resume today as civilians are still sheltered in the plant.

 

The evacuation process was preceded by the visit of UN Secretary General Antonio Gutiérrez first to Moscow and then to Kyiv.

 

The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that with the help of the UN it would be possible to evacuate the civilian population from Mariupol, where there are still about 100,000 people left.

 

Before the war, more than 400,000 people lived in this city.
