Kyiv says Russia’s newest Admiral Makarov ship heading to Black Sea

The Southern Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine says that one of the newest ships of the Russian Navy - Admiral Makarov, Admiral Grigorovich-class frigate of the Russian Navy, is heading to the Black Sea to strengthen Russian forces in the fight against Ukraine.

The command said on Monday that the situation in Odessa remained stable at that moment, however, the probability of missile strikes was increased given the ship was set to sail from Sevastopol to the Black Sea, towards  seven major Russian landing ships and two missile ships.

Russian sources say that Admiral Makarov, which also took part in the Russian military operation in Syria in support of the Assad regime, has been involved in the war against Ukraine since the first days, and in March, with artillery fire from the sea to help Russian ground forces in Mariupol.

On May 21, the Russian state news agency TASS reported, citing its own sources, that after the sinking of the rocket cruiser Moscow, Admiral Makarov might become the flagship of Russia's Black Sea Fleet.

Moscow sank in mid-April as a result of rocket fire by the Ukrainian military.

Russia invaded Ukraine back on February 24.

Hostilities have been in progress since then.
