Turkey takes steps to change the spelling of its name into Türkiye

The Turkish government demands that the name of the country in foreign languages be spelled -  Türkiye.

The country’s foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has already sent a letter to the UN Secretary General, in which he registered Türkiye as the name of the country in foreign languages.

According to the minister, the UN is “ready” for the change and Ankara has promoted the new spelling in many international correspondences.

The name should also appear on labels of products made in the country.

The move follows a decree by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from December last year to use the spelling Türkiye in English, French, German and other languages.

Erdogan claimed that Türkiy described the culture, civilization and values of the Turkish nation the best.
