48 opposition MPs urge ruling party to stop “slanderous, disinformation campaign" against US, EU

The representatives of the parliamentary opposition of Georgia issued a joint statement on Wednesday in which  they called on the Georgian Dream authorities to suspend “slanderous and  disinformation campaigns" against the US and the EU.

"We, the representatives of the Georgian parliamentary opposition recognize the great merit of the United States of America and the European Union in maintaining Georgia's statehood from the restoration of independence on April 9, 1991 until today, their great help in the development of our country and the aspiration of our people to become a full-fledged representative of Western civilization”, said the MPs.

The MPs suggested that the “slanderous campaign” of the ruling party was “voiced” by several members of the ruling party who “formally left the GD” last month “to tell the public the truth”.

“It is particularly alarming that certain representatives of the judicial corps are also involved in this political campaign of Georgian Dream targeted against the West”, said the statement.

The MPs said that the recent letter by the founder of the Georgian Dream, billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, released earlier this month, which said Ivanishvili met the US Ambassador but made no other details public, “also served the anti-Western goals”.

“Such an action of the ruling political force serves the purpose of hindering the integration of Georgia into the European Union and NATO,. We appeal to the Georgian Dream to immediately stop the aforementioned slanderous and disinformation campaign against Georgia's strategic partners - the United States and the European Union.

“We fully support the US Ambassador to Georgia, Kelly Degnan, and the former EU Ambassador, Carl Hartzell. We appreciate the hard work and efforts made by them to help Georgia on the path of Western integration”, said the statement.

The former MPs of the ruling party have accused the US and the EU of supporting the forces “which want to drag Georgia into Russia’s war in Ukraine”.
