Lawyer warns of “fatal consequences” over ex-pres. Saakashvili

Fatal consequences may develop at any time as foreign experts have pointed to “very complicated” health issues, Shalva Khachapuridze, a lawyer of imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili said on Monday.

"There are quite serious disorders on his brain, moreover, alarming diagnoses have been made by American experts, which were not recorded in the conclusions of Georgian doctors and experts for so long.

“Therefore, it is on the agenda to find out what is the cause of this. It is unimaginable that Saakashvili is diagnosed with such complex diseases in such a short period of time under normal prison conditions. Low fevers, problems with movement, color in the face, memory problems, slowness of speech and various symptoms that we see, but the cause of it is still unknown. I highly doubt that this will be determined in any way in Georgia”, said the lawyer.

Saakashvili's lawyers and family members are planning to appeal to the court with a request to postpone the sentence and to transfer the third president abroad for treatment.

Saakashvili was arrested in Tbilisi last October after eight years in political exile.

Currently he is undergoing treatment in a Vivamedi civilian clinic of Tbilisi.

He has been convicted for abuse of power while in office. Three cases involving Saakashvili are pending.
