US supports construction of Anaklia deep-sea port, a “critical infrastructure” - ambassador

Kelly Degnan, the United States Ambassador to Georgia, on Monday said that her country supports the construction of the Anaklia deep-sea-port in the country’s west, near the Russian-controlled Abkhazia region.

“The United States has been a strong supporter of the Anaklia deep water port for years because we think that it can be a very important contribution to Georgia’s orientation to the Black Sea. We can all see now that if Anaklia had been completed last year as was originally planned, it would be a huge contribution as Georgia develops its role in the middle corridor, bringing goods from Central Asia through to Europe”, said the ambassador.

She stated that the port would be “a critical infrastructure” for Georgia to develop, and “that is why the US has been encouraging the development of an Anaklia port for quite some time”.

The Georgian Dream authorities have stated they are taking actions for the construction of the port, with the previous tender-winner company representatives accusing the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Bidzina Ivanishvili, of “deliberate” disruption of the project as it was “against Russian interests”.

Anaklia Port is a $2.5 billion project which was anticipated to connect Europe and Asia with an alternative, shorter route by 2020.

Anaklia Development Consortium won the state tender back in 2016 to attract funds for the construction. However, later, its representatives from TBC Bank Mamuka Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze were charged with money laundering, a still pending case, with both connecting the “unfounded” allegations to the “motive” to hamper the construction.
