Mother claims ex-pres. Saakashvili unable to stand

Giuli Alasania, mother of imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili, on Tuesday said her son was “unable to stand '' in the Vivamedi civilian clinic, where he has been receiving treatment since May of the last year.

“His condition is very complicated. My son has lost too much weight”, Alasania told journalists.

The next trial on granting the release or the postponement of the rest of Saakashvili’s sentence on medical grounds is scheduled on Friday.

Nino Nadiradze, the head of the Vivamedi clinic, said earlier this week the family had not ensured “needed and tasty food” for the patient, with Alasania claiming his son was unable to eat.

Saakahsvili, a citizen of Ukraine, was arrested in Tbilisi in October 2021, after eight years in self-imposed political exile.

Currently he is serving his six-year-sentence for abuse of power while in office.
