If EU decision merit-based, Georgia should receive candidate status this year - ruling party head

The evaluation document of the European Commission has made it clear that under the conditions of decision-making based on objective criteria, Georgia should definitely receive the European Union membership candidate status this year, Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party head on Friday, in response to the European Commission’s report on Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine released on Thursday.

“First of all, we would like to thank the European Commission for the very positive assessment of our country. With the report, the Commission has itself confirmed the country deserved the candidate status last year”, he said.

Kobakhidze noted Georgia was “significantly ahead of Moldova by 12 points and ahead of Ukraine in almost all key parameters”.

“Considering all this, how fair was the political decision made by the EU structures last year, it is left for the public to judge”, the lawmaker said

He reminded the public that the domestic “radical opposition and affiliated NGOs” had tried to spark tension in the country and further deepen polarization with the use of the June 2022 move of the European Council to grant Georgia European perspective instead of the candidate status.

“Once again, we are grateful to the Georgian public, which has evaluated everything correctly and did not give the forces acting with anti-state goals the opportunity to trigger unrest”, Kobakhidze added.
