Georgia’s “historic opportunity not to be missed” - EU Council chair

Charles Michel, the European Council president, on Tuesday said Georgia should use its “historic opportunity” and show progress on its EU integration path through the fulfillment of the bloc’s conditions outlined for the country’s membership candidate status in June.

After his meeting with Georgian president Salome Zourabichvili in Brussels on Monday, the EU official stressed on Tuesday he had reaffirmed the ““EU’s commitment to Zourabichvili over Georgia’s European path” and welcomed the president’s role “in advancing Georgia’s people aspirations”.

“The European Council's decision to grant Georgia European perspective is a historic opportunity not to be missed. Progress on reforms remains crucial”, Michel said.

The bloc is expected to decide on Georgia’s candidacy later this year.
