EU ambassador says it’s his “personal opinion” Georgia should receive EU candidacy

Pawel Herczynski, the European Union ambassador to Georgia, on Wednesday said  it was his personal opinion that Georgia should be granted the bloc’s membership candidate status by the end of this year.

In his press comments, the diplomat said “it is important for Georgia to achieve maximum progress in implementing the recommendations” that was outlined by the European Council last year for granting the status.

"We all know that this is a key moment for Georgia. Georgia is at the crossroads of European integration. That is why it is extremely important that the dialogue between Georgia and the 27 member states of the EU is as intensive as possible”, he said, adding “ that is why we clearly welcome and support the relations of political leaders of Georgia with 27 member states and the visits of high-level politicians of EU member states to Georgia. This is very important, the dialogue is as intensive as possible to ensure that the 27 member states make the right decision at the end of the year”.

Georgia submitted its EU membership application on March 3, 2022. After that, the country's government filled in the questionnaire received from the European Commission. In June 2022 bloc granted Georgia a European perspective, while two other members of the Associated Trio - Ukraine and Moldova - received the EU full candidacy, which Tbilisi called “historic” but “not a merit-based decision”.
