EU candidacy will further strengthen Georgia’s young democracy - parliament speaker

Granting the EU candidate status will further strengthen the young democracy of Georgia and give an incentive to other countries of the region on the path of democratic transformation, parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday told the Foreign Affairs Committee of the French National Assembly.

He claimed Europeanization had been guiding Georgia's domestic and foreign policy for decades and gave  impetus to Georgia's democratization agenda.

"Currently, Georgia already has a European perspective on the way to the European Union. There are no more questions regarding the European future of Georgia, which many generations dreamed of and fought for”, he said.

Papuashvili added the authorities were fulfilling the 12 -point conditions outlined by the European Council last year for granting the candidate status to Georgia.

The bloc is scheduled to decide on Georgia’s candidacy by the end of this year.
