As the world marks the two-year anniversary of Russia's aggressive incursion into Ukraine, US President Joe Biden on Friday  issued a statement condemning Vladimir Putin's actions and announcing measures in response.

In his statement, Biden reflected on the events of two years ago when Russian missiles rained down near Kyiv, and Russian troops crossed into Ukrainian territory, initiating what he termed as Putin's "vicious onslaught against Ukraine."

However, Biden highlighted that Putin's calculations have backfired, with the people of Ukraine showing “unwavering resolve” in defending their freedom, NATO “standing stronger and more united than ever”, and a global coalition rallying behind Ukraine with the US in the lead.


Biden announced over 500 new sanctions targeting individuals linked to the imprisonment of anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny and key sectors of the Russian economy, including finance, defense, and procurement networks. 

He emphasized the urgent need for additional support for Ukraine, urging the House of Representatives to pass a bipartisan national security supplemental bill. This legislation not only provides crucial funding for Ukraine but also strengthens America's own defense capabilities, he noted. 

Biden stressed that now was the time for unity and action, asserting that history will judge harshly those who fail to stand with Ukraine in its hour of need. He underscored the importance of demonstrating “unwavering support for freedom and democracy, sending a clear message that the US will not yield to aggression”.
