Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, on Friday stressed the importance of ensuring that any proposed legislation targeting LGBT propaganda aligns with the principles outlined in the domestic Constitution, which focuses on basic human rights, before saying he backed the ruling party initiative to propose a bill targeting alleged LGBT propaganda. 

Kobakhidze emphasized respecting the constitutional principles was “paramount to him” when considering such a bill and acknowledged the concerns expressed by the parliamentary majority regarding societal trends and their desire to “shield Georgia” from what they perceive as the “negative impacts of pseudo-liberal ideology”.

While expressing understanding for these concerns, Kobakhidze highlighted the necessity of ensuring that any government involvement in drafting such legislation adhered strictly to constitutional principles. He mentioned the possibility of government participation in the drafting process if deemed necessary, although the specifics of such involvement remain to be determined.

The ruling Georgian Dream party, previously chaired by Kobakhidze, has recently announced its intention to introduce legislative measures aimed at safeguarding society from what they view as the adverse effects of pseudo-liberal ideology. This initiative was set to be developed over the next two weeks, with plans for parliamentary review thereafter.
