48 detained on Rustaveli Avenue, says Georgian Interior Ministry

The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has reported the detention of 48 individuals during the night of December 6-7, amidst pro-European protests on Rustaveli Avenue.

According to the MIA’s statement, the detainees face charges of administrative offenses, including disobedience to lawful police orders and petty hooliganism.

The ministry emphasized that protesters had the opportunity to continue expressing their dissent peacefully, as seen during the previous two days. However, it claimed that some demonstrators engaged in violent behavior.

The statement alleges that protesters launched fireworks and other objects at law enforcement officers stationed in front of the Parliament building. The MIA also noted that participants verbally abused police officers and threw rocks and other heavy objects in their direction.

One police officer sustained injuries due to fireworks used by the demonstrators, according to the ministry.

Later in the night, protesters reportedly moved from Rustaveli Avenue toward Heroes’ Square, blocking traffic and clashing with passengers in a vehicle. The MIA identified the passengers as members of the personal security detail of a protected individual, though it did not specify further details.

The protests, driven by the government’s decision to postpone EU membership negotiations until the end of 2028, have entered their ninth consecutive day. Demonstrators demand stronger alignment with European values and an end to perceived government stalling on Georgia’s EU integration path.
