The hunger strike by a group of Shukruti residents, from western Georgia, has entered its twenty-third day as their protest escalates.
The demonstrators moved their protest from the village of Shukruti to the front of the Parliament building in Tbilisi on September 11, demanding government action and accountability from Georgian Manganese, a mining company they accuse of devastating their village.
The residents claim that mining activities in the area have caused extensive environmental damage, leading to the destruction of homes and infrastructure. According to the protesters, Georgian Manganese has failed to offer adequate compensation for the damages, with only a portion of the population receiving what they describe as an “insufficient and meager” settlement.
