The Georgian State Security Service (SSS) has announced the release of Khajarat Akhvlediani and Giorgi Romelashvili, who were previously detained by Russian occupation forces. The two individuals have returned to territory controlled by the central Georgian government.
Throughout the process, the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia and the “hotline” mechanism it coordinates played a key role in facilitating their release. The SSS reports that the Georgian government also employed all relevant tools and consistently updated international partners on developments.
The issue of their detention was strongly raised by Georgian authorities during the Geneva International Discussions (GID) and the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) meetings.
The State Security Service emphasized that responsibility for all destabilizing actions along the occupation line and in Georgia’s occupied regions lies with the occupying forces.
“The Georgian government, in close cooperation with international partners, remains committed to working toward the release of all Georgian citizens detained in the occupied territories,” the statement reads.
