Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described his recent conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump as an “excellent call,” congratulating him on what he called a “historic landslide victory.”
In a post on social media early on Thursday, Zelenskyy praised Trump’s “tremendous campaign” and extended his appreciation to Trump’s family and campaign team for their efforts leading to the win.
During the conversation, Zelenskyy and Trump agreed to maintain “close dialogue” and explore ways to strengthen US-Ukraine cooperation, according to Zelenskyy’s statement.
The Ukrainian president highlighted the importance of American leadership on the global stage, emphasizing its role in securing “a just peace” amid regional conflicts and rising international tensions.
Trump, who won the November 5 presidential election against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, is set to be inaugurated on January 20, 2025.
Throughout his campaign, Trump frequently expressed dissatisfaction with the scale of military assistance provided to Ukraine by President Joe Biden’s administration. He notably described Zelenskyy as “one of the most outstanding businessmen” he had ever encountered, referencing the $60.4 billion in US military aid allocated to Ukraine under Biden.
