Civil society leader: Returning Georgia back to democratic path became EU’s ‘matter of principle’

The European Union now views it as a “matter of dignity and principle” to help Georgia return to a path of democratic progress and secure its European future, stated Tina Khidasheli, head of the organization Civil Idea. Khidasheli emphasized that Georgia currently stands at a critical historical juncture that must not be missed.

“This commitment from the EU is evident as high-ranking delegations continue to visit the country,” said Khidasheli, adding that recent diplomatic interactions signal the EU’s dedication to promoting democratic reform in Georgia. Referring to recent encounters, she noted, “We saw how officials bypassed Kobakhidze without a handshake or greeting, yet EU Council President Charles Michel still met with him to press the importance of this historic opportunity for the country.”

A high-ranking European delegation, including chairs of several parliamentary committees, will arrive in Tbilisi on November 11, with members expected to deliver strong statements regarding alleged election irregularities.
