Moldova’s Foreign Ministry has condemned what it called Russia’s “aggressive” actions after two Russian drones entered Moldovan airspace and crashed within its borders on November 10. Moldovan authorities discovered one of the drones in the northern village of Borosenii Noi, about 45 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, and the other in the southern village of Firlădeni, just 40 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Both drones were identified as decoy models, intended to confuse Ukrainian air defenses.
In a formal statement, the Foreign Ministry strongly denounced the “aggressive incursion,” calling Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine a grave threat to regional stability.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu also addressed the incidents, underscoring that while these drones currently pose no immediate threat to Moldova’s residents, their presence near the border highlights the ongoing risks. She emphasized the importance of vigilance, noting, “While these incidents do not currently pose a direct threat to the Republic of Moldova, the proximity of the war to our borders and the presence of drones in our airspace are certainly concerning.”
President Sandu called for increased measures to enhance the country’s defense capabilities, stressing the need to “acquire the necessary technologies to protect the entire country and ensure the safety of all citizens.”
Russia’s Foreign Ministry, meanwhile, has “categorically” denied Moldova’s accusations, asserting that the claims lack evidence. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Moldova has reported at least 15 similar incidents involving Russian drones, adding to the mounting security concerns near the eastern borders of Europe.
