Germany’s Foreign Ministry has called for a reassessment of the European Union’s relationship with Georgia, including measures supporting the country’s EU accession process.
The statement, issued during a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on Monday, highlights concerns over Georgia’s deviation from EU norms and values.
“For several months, we have observed how the Georgian Government has been turning its back on the norms and values of the European Union. International election observers have now also confirmed that irregularities occurred in Georgia’s parliamentary elections on 26 October. We are calling for a full and transparent inquiry into all complaints and accusations,” the statement read.
Germany also emphasized the need to evaluate the EU’s supportive measures in the context of Georgia’s membership bid.
’’EU relations with Georgia must also be reassessed, including European Union support measures for Georgia in the context of the accession process,” the German Foreign Ministry stressed.
Currently, Georgia’s EU accession process is stalled, with the European Commission refraining from recommending the start of negotiations. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell has proposed redirecting €100 million in aid, initially allocated for the Georgian government, to civil society organizations.
