Georgian police detained 16 protesters on Tuesday during demonstrations on Chavchavadze and Melikishvili Avenues, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has confirmed. The individuals were arrested under administrative law, with three later released on personal recognizance.
The arrests followed a dawn operation by law enforcement to disperse protesters who had spent the night camped on Chavchavadze Avenue.
Officers dismantled protest tents and called on demonstrators to disband, citing violations of assembly laws.
A physical confrontation reportedly broke out during the operation, escalating tensions between protesters and police.
The protests are part of ongoing demonstrations contesting the results of Georgia’s October 26 general elections, which opposition groups claim were rigged in favor of the ruling Georgian Dream party.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to upholding public order while balancing the right to peaceful assembly. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has faced criticism from opposition leaders and civil rights groups, who accuse the police of excessive force and interference in lawful protests.
