Parliament’s mandate on hold until constitutional dispute is resolved, expert says

Constitutional expert Vakhushti Menabde stated that Georgia’s Parliament cannot confirm its mandate until the constitutional court resolves the dispute over the October 26 elections. The comment follows President Salome Zourabichvili’s filing of a case challenging electoral secrecy and universality violations.

Menabde noted that while the court could technically expedite its decision, a thorough and objective case review would take longer.

“If the court approaches this issue with the seriousness it demands, resolving it within one or two days seems unlikely,” he said.

On November 19, President Zourabichvili officially filed the case, arguing that the election results failed to uphold key constitutional principles. This legal challenge adds to the political uncertainty surrounding Georgia’s contested parliamentary elections.
