Michael Roth, Chair of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee, has issued a stark warning regarding the situation in Georgia. He claims the government is waging war against its own citizens. His remarks come amid escalating protests against the ruling Georgian Dream party, which recently suspended the country’s efforts to join the European Union (EU) for four years, a decision that has ignited widespread outrage.
Roth condemned the Georgian government’s actions as a betrayal of democratic values and a threat to freedom. He emphasized that Europe must not ignore the plight of Georgians fighting for their rights and urged solidarity with those committed to European ideals.
”Europe must finally wake up. We must stand by committed Europeans! In Georgia our common values are at risk,” he stressed.
Following Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s announcement to pause EU accession talks until 2028, thousands of protesters took to the streets in Tbilisi and other cities, expressing their discontent and calling for a return to democratic governance.
