The Georgian Central Election Commission (CEC) has finalized the results of the presidential election, declaring Mikheil Kavelashvili as the country’s sixth president. Kavelashvili, who was the sole candidate, was elected by the Election College.
The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for December 29.
Out of 225 total ballots, 224 members of the Election College voted in favor of Kavelashvili, with one invalid vote. Ada Marshania, representing Abkhazia’s Supreme Council quota in the Election College, publicly stated her opposition to Kavelashvili’s candidacy.
This marks the first time Georgia has elected a president indirectly through the Election College, a significant departure from the previous system of direct popular vote.
Kavelashvili will serve a five-year term as president.
