Georgia maintains position as safe country amid global terrorist challenges, says State Security Service

The State Security Service of Georgia (SSS) convened the eighth meeting of the Interagency Permanent Commission on the Development and Monitoring of the National Counter-Terrorism Strategy and Action Plan. Senior officials from member agencies participated in the session, chaired by SSS head Grigol Liluashvili.

The SSS released a statement, saying Liluashvili opened the meeting by addressing the global, regional, and domestic counter-terrorism landscape, emphasizing the critical importance of constant coordination and engagement among commission members. He highlighted the significance of Georgia’s National Counter-Terrorism Strategy and Action Plan in strengthening national security and the country’s efforts and achievements in international counter-terrorism cooperation.

The SSSG chief underscored recent positive evaluations of Georgia’s counter-terrorism capabilities by international partners, including the US State Department, and the 2024 “Global Terrorism Index” report published by the Institute for Economics and Peace. According to the index, Georgia remains secure concerning terrorist challenges.

During the meeting, attendees reviewed Georgia’s current counter-terrorism environment and received updates on key operations conducted by the SSS in 2024, along with planned initiatives to address emerging threats.

The statement underlines that Georgian government established the Interagency Permanent Commission to develop a unified national policy for combating terrorism, minimize and prevent threats, and enhance the coordinated efforts of state structures in this critical field.
