European Parliament to debate political unrest in Georgia and Belarus

The European Parliament will on Tuesday convene for a debate focusing on the political unrest and ongoing repression in Georgia and Belarus. The debate, scheduled for 16:00 Tbilisi time, will address the current situation in these two countries.

In addition to the European Parliament discussions, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) will also examine Georgia’s parliamentary elections. A report assessing the October 26 elections in Georgia will be presented during the winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly, which will take place in Strasbourg from January 27 to 31.

The report on the Georgian elections was initiated by Julian Boulay, Head of the PACE Delegation, and will provide an in-depth evaluation of the electoral process. A delegation from PACE, including co-rapporteurs Claude Kern of France (ALDE) and Edith Estrella of Portugal (SOC), visited Georgia from January 14-16 on a fact-finding mission. Their objective was to assess Georgia’s compliance with its obligations as a Council of Europe member state.
