Italian authorities have arrested 19 Georgian women on charges of possessing and manufacturing fake identification documents. Reportedly, the women were working in Italy as caregivers.
According to the Udine Prosecutor’s Office, complaints have also been filed against an additional 17 women, and investigations are ongoing in their cases.
The investigation suggests that the arrested individuals used forged IDs to obtain fiscal codes from the revenue service, which they later used to move to other regions for work.
All suspects were found to possess fake identification documents from EU countries, including Slovakia, Poland, and Lithuania, which do not restrict residence or employment in Italy.
Reports indicate that the counterfeit IDs were produced abroad for approximately €600 each. If the fraudulent scheme is confirmed, the Georgian nationals will face expulsion from Italy.
