European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, has expressed concerns over potential trade tensions with the United States. In a statement to reporters in Brussels ahead of an informal EU leaders’ meeting, Kallas emphasized the detrimental effects of trade wars, stating, “It is clear that there are no winners in trade wars.”
Kallas was responding to US President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of tariffs against the EU. She cautioned that such actions could inadvertently benefit China, noting, “If the US starts a trade war, the one who will laugh will be China.” She further highlighted the interconnectedness between the US and the EU, asserting, “We are very interconnected. We need America and America needs us.”
The EU official also pointed out the negative impact of tariffs on consumers, stating that they “increase costs and hurt consumers.”
