Georgia’s Deputy Minister of Justice resigns

Georgia’s Deputy Minister of Justice, Erekle Gvinianidze, has stepped down from his position. The press service of the Ministry of Justice confirmed he no longer holds office as of February 10. However, the reasons behind his resignation remain unclear.

Gvinianidze had served as Deputy Minister since 2022, following his tenure as the Chairman of the National Bureau of Enforcement under the same ministry. His resignation comes just months after the Georgian Dream-dominated parliament approved the new government led by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on November 28, 2024. The new cabinet, which includes Anri Okhanashvili as Minister of Justice, has been met with strong opposition. The legitimacy of both the parliament and the government has been challenged by opposition parties, fifth President Salome Zourabichvili, non-governmental organizations, and international partners.

Georgia has been witnessing daily pro-European demonstrations, with protesters demanding new parliamentary elections. The public outcry intensified after the ruling party announced on November 28 that it would not take the initiative to open negotiations for European Union membership until 2028.
