The Georgian opposition has strongly criticized the government’s handling of the severe snowfall that has paralyzed multiple regions, particularly Guria. Heavy snow has left many villages isolated, with residents running low on essential supplies such as food, water, and medicine.
In response, the government has deployed defense forces to assist affected residents. However, Giga Lemonjava, a leader of the Coalition for Change, accused authorities of failing to take preventive measures and using the crisis for political gain.
“The instinct of this corrupt system is always to use human suffering to boost its political ratings. They even exploit disasters to discredit opponents,” Lemonjava stated. He emphasized that the government should have identified high-risk areas and taken action before the crisis unfolded.
“This is a time for solidarity and support. Instead, the government is focused on scoring political points. Everyone knows Guria is a high-risk zone, and the authorities should have planned accordingly,” he added.
Heavy snowfall has caused widespread disruption in the Guria and Adjara regions of western Georgia, leaving many villages isolated and residents struggling without essential supplies. In Lanchkhuti and Ozurgeti municipalities, the snow’s weight has caused significant damage, with at least 40 homes reported to have collapsed. The extreme weather has also led to the cancellation of several transportation routes.
As the situation remains critical, affected communities continue to call for urgent assistance, while the opposition demands better crisis management and accountability from the government.
