Georgia is set to experience a sharp drop in temperatures this week, with authorities warning of hazardous weather conditions across the country.
According to the National Environmental Agency, temperatures will plunge between 28 February and 2 March, with lows of -5°C to -10°C in the western lowlands and -7°C to -12°C in the eastern lowlands. The cold will be even more severe in mountainous regions, where temperatures could reach -13°C to -18°C, while highland areas may drop to a bitter -18°C to -23°C.
Officials have also warned of treacherous conditions on roads, particularly in Western Georgia, where ice and freezing on power lines are expected. Avalanche risks remain high in highland zones, posing additional dangers to travellers and residents.
Heavy snowfall, poor visibility, strong winds, and icy roads could lead to traffic restrictions on key highways, the agency said. Drivers have been urged to exercise caution and monitor official updates.
Farmers in the Kolkheti lowland have also been advised to prepare for potential crop damage, as temperatures as low as -10°C could threaten citrus production.
Authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions as the cold spell moves in, with further updates expected in the coming days.
