Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called for strengthening NATO’s eastern flank. He believes that Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security and will address his allies on this issue at the London summit on March 2.
“This will be a real test of the intentions and capabilities of all European states—to have European allied troops stationed in Finland, the Baltic states, and Poland, along the borders with Russia and Belarus,” Tusk said.
He emphasized that Poland must have an “additional insurance policy” in the form of enhanced defensive capabilities for both the country and Europe as a whole. According to Tusk, Europe must step up and take greater responsibility for the continent’s security.
“It’s a paradox—look at how it sounds: 500 million Europeans are asking 300 million Americans to protect them from 140 million Russians. If you can do the math, then you should have confidence in yourselves,” Tusk remarked.
The Polish leader also expressed support for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s proposal to convene a summit of European leaders and the United States to discuss defense and security strategies.
