Ruling party MP thanks Azerbaijan for ‘standing by Georgia even in most difficult moments’

“First and foremost, we must express our gratitude to Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijani people for standing by Georgia even during the most challenging times,” said Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Georgian Parliament, Nikoloz Samkharadze.

Samkharadze commented on a statement by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who criticized the European Commission’s stance on Georgia’s internal affairs, calling it “absolutely unacceptable” and likening it to a “colonialist approach.” Aliyev added, “They are trying to view the will of the Georgian people through the lens of a colonial past. This is entirely unacceptable.”

According to the MP, the international community clearly sees that the European Union is treating Georgia unfairly.

He also emphasized that no amount of pressure or threats will influence the Georgian state.

“Throughout history, they [Azerbaijan] have stood by Georgia. As for President Aliyev’s statement—he is not the only one who sees this; many others around the world recognize that the European Union’s approach toward Georgia is unjust. They are trying to use this unfairness as leverage to pressure the Georgian government and the Georgian people. However, our society has learned the lessons of the past well, and what matters most to us are the interests of the Georgian state and the Georgian people. Therefore, no pressure or threat can influence the Georgian state. Once again, President Aliyev’s statement confirms that the world has a very accurate understanding of the processes currently unfolding in Georgia,” Samkharadze said.
