US lifts sanctions on Hungarian official Antal Rogan

The United States has lifted sanctions on Antal Rogan, a senior aide to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, citing a reassessment of foreign policy interests.

Rogan, who has served as the head of Orbán’s cabinet since 2015, was sanctioned by the Joe Biden administration on 7 January 2025 over alleged involvement in corruption, including the distribution of public contracts to political allies. The Hungarian government had contested the sanctions at the time.

On 15 April, Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó of the decision to remove Rogan from the sanctions list, stating that his continued designation was no longer consistent with US foreign policy interests.

The US Treasury Department confirmed the removal through a notice on its official website.
