Revival of United National Movement serves ruling party interests, For Georgia party

Natia Mezvrishvili, deputy chair of ex-Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia’s For Georgia party, on Wednesday criticized the Georgian Dream (GD) party for alleged reviving the “disbanded” United National Movement, the former ruling power, to create an illusion of threat and manipulate public perception.

Speaking at a briefing at the party’s office, Mezvrishvili accused Georgian Dream of having shared corrupt interests with the UNM.

Mezvrishvili, the former top official, highlighted that the implementation of a scheme involving call centers would not have been possible without the support of the ruling power. She pointed to a recent letter from US congressmen as evidence of the alleged collusion between Georgian Dream and the United National Movement, asserting that the partnership was rooted in corruption.

According to Mezvrishvili, the scheme involves using “black money from Georgian Dream and Bidzina Ivanishvili” to allegedly bribe voters, employ troll-bots, and fund experts who disseminate anti-Western disinformation. She cited the party’s May 2023 demand for a parliamentary investigative commission to address these concerns.

Mezvrishvili claimed that Georgian Dream’s refusal to investigate the scheme further exposed their alleged commitment to corruption.

With the October 26, 2024 election approaching, Mezvrishvili positioned it as a battle against corruption, black money in politics, and oligarchic influence. She expressed confidence that voters would support a political force free from corruption and oligarchic control, vowing to fight for a Georgia free from these influences.
