Massive fire in Russia’s Rostov Region sparked by Ukrainian drone attack

A fire covering an area of 10,000 square meters broke out in the city of Proletarsk, Rostov region, Russia, on August 18 following an attack by Ukrainian drones on a local enterprise.

Valery Gornich, head of the Proletarsk district administration, updated the situation on Tuesday, informing the Russian state agency TASS that the fire was fueled by diesel, but there was no danger of an explosion, and no evacuation plans were in place. Gornich also reported that over 500 firefighters, supported by special aviation units, were actively working to extinguish the blaze.

On the morning of August 18, Vasiliy Golubev, Governor of Russia’s Rostov Region, announced that the Air Defense Forces had repelled the Ukrainian drone attack. However, debris from the incident caused a fire in the industrial warehouse area in Proletarsk.

Later that day, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed that the Kavkaz plant in the Rostov region, which stores oil and oil products intended for the Russian military, was successfully targeted.

On August 19, Governor Golubev reported that 41 firefighters were injured in the efforts to control the fire, with 18 requiring hospitalization. As a result, a state of emergency has been declared in the Proletarsk district.

Ukraine, which has been resisting Russian military aggression for over two years, has declared military facilities and enterprises supplying the Russian army as legitimate targets within Russian territory.
