Tina Bokuchava, the Chair of the United National Movement (UNM) opposition party has sharply criticized the founder and Honorary Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party, Bidzina Ivanishvili, stating that he is fundamentally opposed to critical thinking, free media, free speech, and an independent civil sector, all of which are the essence and foundation of a democratic society.
Bokuchava expressed confidence that Georgian citizens will choose democracy, European integration, and prosperity soon through the upcoming October 26 elections.
“Bidzina Ivanishvili cannot tolerate critical thinking, the media, free speech, or a civil society free from political influence and pressure. However, these are the cornerstones of a democratic society. I am certain that the people of Georgia will choose democracy, a European future, and well-being.
Bokuchava’s comment came in connection to Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s recent statement that the government will allocate double the amount of funding from the state budget to non-governmental organizations compared to what they receive from donor organizations.
