American analyst Luke Coffey commented on Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s recent visit to the US, stating that the cancellation of invitations to high-level meetings was a significant embarrassment for the Georgian government.
Speaking to Voice of America, Coffey emphasized that the next logical step for the US would be the enforcement of sanctions.
“The only thing worse than not being invited is being invited and then having that invitation revoked. I think this is a very shameful moment for the Georgian government,” Coffey said.
He further explained that the cancellations of meetings, including the withdrawal of an invitation to an event with President Biden and other US officials, are direct consequences of the situation in Georgia.
“I’m not sure what the US government is waiting for. The next logical step is the enforcement of sanctions. Imposing such sanctions might make us feel better, as it would show that we are doing something to address the situation, but the real question is: What will it practically change in Georgia?” Coffey, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, added.
Coffey’s comments reflect growing concerns over Georgia’s political trajectory and its relations with Western partners, particularly the US and NATO.
