Herman Szabo, a member of the Girchi party opposition, on Friday advocated for greater transparency and accessibility in the funding of political parties and emphasized the importance of allowing individuals to financially support parties that represent their ideals.
“Any interested person should have the opportunity to finance the political party that represents him as a carrier of his ideas,” Szabo asserted. “It’s just important that it be public and transparent.”
Reacting to discussions on the role of non-governmental organizations and their relationship with political parties, the MP suggested that by improving party financing practices, the need for certain NGOs by political parties to obtain funds could potentially diminish.
“Instead of pointing fingers, let’s think about how to simplify and have a decent, humane party financing,” Szabo urged.
The ruling Georgian Dream party officials claim opposition parties create NGOs and receive “illegal funding” from the western countries through them.
