On Friday, the Presidents of Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, and Poland issued a joint declaration in Klaipėda, expressing profound disappointment at Georgia’s recent decision to suspend negotiations on European Union membership.
”Noting that EU integration is Georgia’s constitutional commitment, the leaders of the four countries described the decision as a serious setback to the aspirations of the Georgian people,” The joint statement reads.
The four Presidents also called for an independent international investigation into reported violations during Georgia’s parliamentary elections on October 26, 2024, and reiterated the European Parliament’s call for a re-run of the elections.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the use of force against the Georgian people, as well as the arbitrary detention of individuals exercising their rights,” the declaration reads. The leaders called on Georgian authorities to immediately halt violent actions and to respect fundamental freedoms of assembly and expression, in line with Georgia’s international obligations.
The Presidents also demanded an immediate investigation into the acts of violence that occurred during protests, calling for those responsible to be held accountable. They reaffirmed their strong support for Georgia’s aspirations towards European integration and reiterated their commitment to supporting the Georgian people in their pursuit of democratic reforms and EU membership.
