Constitutional Court judge Khvicha Kikalishvili resigns five years early

Judge Khvicha Kikalishvili has resigned from Georgia’s Constitutional Court five years before his term was set to expire. He confirmed the news to TV Pirveli, stating that he had submitted his resignation over a week ago.

“I left by my own decision… The law does not require me to explain my reasons,” Kikalishvili told the broadcaster.

Kikalishvili was appointed as a Constitutional Court judge in 2020 for a 10-year term under the Supreme Court’s quota. His replacement must now be nominated by the Supreme Court.

Additionally, Merab Turava, the current Chairman of the Constitutional Court, will step down in April 2025 when his term expires. Turava was appointed under the Parliament’s quota, meaning the selection of his replacement falls to the Georgian Parliament. Once both positions are filled, the Constitutional Court Plenum will also need to elect a new chairman.

Alongside Kikalishvili and Turava, the remaining judges of the Constitutional Court are: Vasil Roinishvili, Eva Gotsiridze, Giorgi Tevdorashvili, Giorgi Kverenchkhiladze, Manana Kobakhidze, Irine Imerlishvili, and Teimuraz Tughushi.
