Decision on my impeachment “already made” in ruling party, or “somewhere in the north” – Zourabichvili

President Salome Zourabichvili on Wednesday told the Parliament the decision on her impeachment had been made by “top figures” of the ruling Georgian Dream party, or “somewhere in the north”, following the Constitutional Court’s ruling on Monday, which approved the allegations by the GD that the President had violated the law through her EU visits last month without the Government’s consent.

“I am not going to prove anything, because I think that the Georgian society knows very well what I tried and what I was able to do, within the framework of those narrow rights, in order to raise respect for our country, trust and cooperation with our European partners to another level. The result in this field is not measured, it does not involve negotiations, it only requires that the other side has an interest and desire to have a relationship with you”, Zourabichvili said, claiming she had violated “neither the essene, or the spirit” of the country’s main law.

Zourabichvili said she did not expect “anything from today’s farce”.

“I know very well that the decision has already been made, somewhere above in the higher levels of the party, or somewhere in the north, where they know very well who will never open their way in this country and will block them everywhere and always”, she said.

After calling the ruling party MPs “little men”, Zourabichvili claimed those who would vote for her impeachment would go “against the country’s European future”, and that her “sole plan” was Georgia’s obtaining the EU membership candidate status later this year.

The United National Movement and Strategy Agmashenebeli opposition parties are boycotting the impeachment session, while the ruling party is accusing the President of being “in alliance” with radical opposition groups”, and “threatening” the country’s European integration.
