Doctors demand cessation chemical agents used against protesters in Georgia

A petition signed by up to 1000 medical professionals in Georgia is calling for the immediate cessation of chemical agents used to disperse peaceful protesters on Rustaveli Avenue.

The doctors have expressed grave concerns over the health consequences of these substances, citing an increase in the number of individuals seeking medical assistance with acute symptoms. They also warn that the long-term effects of these toxic agents remain unpredictable, raising significant public health concerns.

The petition emphasizes that it is the responsibility of the Ministry of Health to investigate the issue and ensure the safety of citizens. The statement notes:

“CDC guidelines highlight that the severity of harm caused by such chemical agents depends on various internal and external factors. Given the high prevalence of chronic illnesses and rising cancer rates in Georgia, particularly among the young population, the prolonged and widespread use of such substances could exacerbate these health challenges.”

The petition lists two urgent demands:
* Immediate disclosure of the specific chemical agents used by law enforcement during the protests.
* A complete halt to the use of chemical substances against demonstrators.
The medical community urges the government to prioritize public health and respect international norms by discontinuing these harmful practices.
