The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, on Wednesday issued a statement marking the 16th anniversary of Russia’s military aggression against Georgia, asserting the body’s support for Georgia had not changed.
“Sixteen years after Russia’s aggression against Georgia, the European Parliament has not wavered in its support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the European aspirations of its people”, she said on her X account.
The August 2008 Russia-Georgia war resulted in significant loss of life and injury. According to official records, 170 personnel from the Georgian Ministry of Defense, 14 Ministry of Internal Affairs employees, and 224 civilians were killed. Additionally, 2,232 individuals were wounded or injured, including 1,045 military personnel.
